John Kilburn's article provides a valuable complement to Alan Barnes' contribution. In examining the difficult area of teacher-pupil interaction (and the feelings evoked by such encounters) he raises a number of important, but delicate, issues not often raised for public discussion. The editors would welcome similar reflections on the complexities and delicacies of practice.
