Helping children to develop language is a skilled and sensitive activity; providing inservice education and materials to facilitate this is, at least, equally difficult and skilled a task. So is communicating to readers of a journal how far the work of Joan Tough and her team is likely to succeed in communicating about communication. John Stanndard provides a sensitive, finely-argued but constructive critique which penetrates the ‘deep structure’ of teacher-pupil communication and raises important but threatening issues, not least about ‘talk as the medium in which relationships grow or abort’.
