Psychologists in the community

Pages 33-47 | Published online: 07 Jul 2006

Abstract

The Authors are Community Psychologists employed by the Social Services Department of the London Borough of Newham. The birth and development of the Community Psychology Team is well described by Bender (1976) and elsewhere. Currently there are a Principal, Deputy, 3 Seniors and a basic grade Psychologist employed. They are joined from time to time by students from Psychology (under and post graduate), Social Work, Sociology and Counselling. The bureaucratic and organisational links of the Psychologists tie them nominally to individual posts such as adolescence, mental handicap etc. However with the co‐operation of senior management, these responsibilities are serviced collectively by the team.
