Development of a preschool self‐concept scale

Pages 89-107 | Published online: 28 Nov 2010

Abstract

Progress in the development of a self‐concept scale for preschool children is reported. A recently developed pictorial self‐concept scale is examined in relation to previous efforts to construct such a measure. A number of promising psychometric properties for the Piers Preschool Pictorial Self‐Concept Scale are discussed. Directions for future research include: (a) item comparisons and scale validity studies using related instruments, (b) comparisons for subjects from diverse ethnic backgrounds, and (c) examination of possible relationships between scale scores and children's optimism or their tendencies to respond in a socially desirable manner.
