Abstract
This study probes the development, behavior and environment of precocious readers. A sample of youngsters was collected through voluntary, self referral. Youngsters within this sample were first tested to determine if they were or were not precocious readers. A study sample emerged. Data reported herein are the result of intake interviews conducted with parents of precocious readers. A fifty-five item questionnaire was used to generate these data. Results indicate a strong interaction between the precocious reader and his/her mother. Mothers tended to be home-based. For some specific areas, the onset of developmental events appears to be slightly accelerated for precocious readers. Reading and reading related events play a strong role in the lives and environments of precocious readers. The descriptive research presented herein provides greater insight into some characteristics of precocious readers.
