‘Not wilting flowers again!’ problem finding and problem solving in movement and performance

Abstract

This paper outlines a process‐oriented approach to teaching movement and performance that integrates the theoretical aspects of movement with a practical teaching method. The approach applies a play and problem solving model, which focuses on the creative process rather than creation of a product, to development of a method of teaching that encourages problem finding and problem solving. The teacher's role in this process is that of facilitator. Participants are encouraged to take responsibility for identifying a problem and solving that problem, and in the process, develop improved communication skills, interpersonal skills, and self confidence. Positive effects, as well as potentially limiting factors are discussed in terms of teaching the process to early childhood trainee teachers.
