Abstract

This is part of a research project exploring ways in which the nurses in the child health centre can help the parents to cope with an infant whose crying is perceived by the mothers as excessive. The present study explores the relation between parents and the infant and is focussed on the specific quality of the relation between mother and infant during the first months in the infant's life. An interview was completed with 3 mothers who experienced their infant to be an excessively crying infant addressing the feelings they had when leaving the infant temporarily to another caretaker. Their responses suggest a picture of mothers who cannot be relaxed and amuse themselves when away from the infant. These mothers worried and longed for their infants. The conclusion drawn is that this strong dependency between mother and infant in this group during the first months in the infant's life should be discussed in parent education programs and needs to be kept in mind when giving advice to parents of excessive crying infants.
