Abstract
In contrast to the other themed sessions within the meeting, the following session comprises three apparently disparate subject areas. However, together these share the distinction of collectively addressing and demonstrating novel techniques and ideas--some of which may be controversial--to encourage lateral thinking across mineralized tissue biology. In addition, these papers illustrate seminal concepts that raise important issues cutting across prevailing dogma. With the advent of new technologies and an increasing portfolio of mineralized tissue research, it may be timely to revisit some of our previously held ideas. We now need to ask ourselves whether or not the following exist within the context of the mineralized tissues and perhaps review previous data in the light of new information.
