The dextral triforid genus Metaxia (Mollusca: Gastropoda) in the south‐west Pacific

Pages 111-117 | Received 15 Dec 1976, Published online: 26 Oct 2010

Abstract

Species of Metaxia Monterosato are shown to be dextrally coiled, cerithiopsid‐like members of the Triforidae, a family of normally sinistrally coiling species. Socienna exaltata (Powell) is referred to Metaxia; M. kermadecensis n.sp. is described from off the Kermadec Islands; and the South Australian Seilarex attenuata (Hedley) is shown to be closely related. On shell, opercular, and radular characters a new subfamily—Metaxiinae—is erected for their accommodation.
