New Zealand Lepidoptera: Basic biogeography

Pages 679-687 | Received 19 Jan 1989, Accepted 24 Feb 1989, Published online: 06 Jan 2012

Abstract

The composition of the New Zealand Lepidoptera fauna is briefly described, and affinities within Tortricidae analysed. Sixty-five genera are used to indicate four possible sets of relationships, but shortcomings of taxonomic interpretations are outlined. Except for species with a wide dispersal range (some 6% of the fauna) most show affinities consonant with terrane biogeography. The panbiogeographic methodology is a potent tool in systematics, giving direction to the research effort.
