Abstract
We respond to the critique of our subalpine cicada study (White & Sedcole 1993, this issue) by Lane (1993, also this issue). We rebut all primary criticisms, noting assumptions and errors of fact, and pointing out that the critique adopts certain premises that are inappropriate to a study of heterogeneous and patchy communities. Only two criticisms justify additional explanation in a revised paper.
