Abstract
Three trials were conducted at Lincoln to examine the effect on lucerne growth of sowing it with cover crops. When lucerne was established with barley sown at 56 kg/ha, yield was restored to that of clear-seeded lucerne after one to four harvests. Yield of vndersown lucerne was higher with irrigation, and with the lower cover crop seeding rate. Lucerne sown with spring-sown barley yielded more than lucerne sown with winter-sown wheat. Weeds were less competitive than cover crops. The mean grain yield of barley sown at 56 kg/ha with lucerne equalled the mean yield loss of undersown lucerne.
