PEASANT FARMING AND THE RURAL ECONOMY OF THE EAST CAPE

Pages 172-174 | Published online: 28 May 2010

Abstract

Peasant agriculture seeks to supplement off-farm sources of income rather than to sustain rural families. In order to enable small part-time farmers to make the most efficient use of the existing agricultural resouces, support systems must be designed keeping this reality in mind. These systems will differ in many respects from those designed to facilitate the establishment of farmers.
