Abstract

Information was obtained from 160 households during 2000 in order to estimate factors influencing adoption of hybrid maize seed and fertiliser technologies by emerging farmers in Amangwane and Amazizi wards of KwaZulu-Natal using a logit model. Results showed that male farmers, who are older, operate more arable land, own more livestock (liquidity) and have access to information sources are adopters of hybrid maize seed and fertiliser. Planning and extension based on farmer and farm attributes, socio-economic and institutional variables can lead to more effective targeting of small-scale farmers to promote higher adoption rates.
