Abstract
Water is fundamental to the overall quality of life. Southern Africa is increasingly becoming a water scarce region and indicators that convey the dependency of economic activities and continued development on water are necessary for efficient policy decision-making. Natural resource accounting is used here to build water resource accounts for South Africa from 1991 to 1998, indicating that the value-added per cubic meter of water input ranges from R0.5/m3 to R1369/m3 for certain economic activities, with an average for all sectors of R 25/m3.
