Abstract
A worksite health promotion programme focused on cardiovascular risk factor reduction has been designed and developed at the Institute for Documentation and Information, Social Medicine and Public Health (IDIS). In order to achieve maximum flexibility in programme structure and processes, amodular system with a variety of freely combinable components was chosen. Three basic categories of programme components are available: risk factor screening, courses on health education and life-style improvement and programmes to create a healthy work environment. Programme participation is voluntary, anonymous and free of charge. Data are collected for subsequent evaluation. Combining screening tests and corresponding courses on life style modification is considered essential (e.g., cholesterol measurement and seminars on good nutrition and healthy cooking). Most activities are offered on company time. Cooperation with top management, workers’ council and company physician is vital to the programme’s success. A set of uniformly designed brochures, posters and other media is provided by the Institute. Programme evaluation reveals acceptance and efficacy of programme activities. Screening participation ranges between 54% and 67% of employees. Of 535 participants evaluated before and after the programme, 66% of programme participants to date reported changes in their health behaviour. Blood pressure and cholesterol levels decreased by an average of 10% during the programme. Thus cardiovascular risk factor reduction can be achieved through worksite intervention.
