Rumanian Women in Technology

Pages 257-259 | Published online: 15 Oct 2007

SUMMARY

Rumania is a country which has modernised very rapidly following the Second World War, under a Government policy of strongly encouraging able young people of both sexes to take up studies and careers in fields crucial to industrial development. While traditional attitudes are still to be found, the combination of a strong movement towards sex equality together with the changes in technical work brought about by computer and electronic developments is ensuring that women are taking up a very significant role in technical employment. The Rumanian commitment towards involving young people of both sexes in technical activities is strongly stressed and this is undoubtedly a major factor underlining the relatively high proportion of women in engineering careers. The high percentage of women engineering lecturers will ensure that women students in technical fields have many role models to emulate for the foreseeable future. A recent exhibition of scientific and technical achievements of Rumanian women, technical workers was a great success.
