Marking Reliability in B.Sc. Engineering Examinations

Pages 487-494 | Published online: 27 Apr 2007

SUMMARY

Five copies of unmarked scripts of a B.Sc. (Eng) third year course in Circuit Theory were marked by five different markers, each working to the same marking scheme.

The standard deviation of a candidates mark about his mean mark fell within the range 1 to 10 marks out of a maximum of 100 marks. The average standard deviation was 7 marks. If N examination papers are taken, with a maximum average of 100 marks and equal weighting, then the estimated standard deviation of all the papers equals 7/√N.
