Abstract
A previous study reported on voting blocs in the UN General Assembly, 1946–70, and traced the changes in the number of members supporting the USA and the USSR over this period of time (Newcombs, Eckhardt, & Young, 1973). The purpose of this paper is to update these changes to 1975, and to analyze them at the regional level as well as at the global level. The previous study showed that USA support was seven times USSR support in the first five years of the UN, 1946–50. USA support decreased significantly to about two times USSR support in the 1950s, and decreased further to 1.3 times USSR support in the 1960s. This trend has continued into the 1970s, when USA support has decreased significantly to 0.6 times USSR support. From the first five‐year period, 1946–50, to the last five‐year period, 1971–75, the USSR has increased its support relative to the USA by almost 12 times. Further details concerning this general finding will be presented following a description of the methods and subjects used in this study.
