THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FOURIER SERIES IN OPTIMAL DESIGN FOR TRANSIENT RESPONSE

Abstract

This paper attempts to assess the effectiveness of the method of truncated Fourier series in problems of structural optimization. That is done by studying the transient vibrations for a shear beam subjected to a uniform load which is applied as a step function in time. First, second, and third order solutions are constructed; their performance is compared to “exact” solutions obtained by numerical integration.
