The editors would like to express their gratitude to Florida International University's African and African Diaspora Studies Program, particularly its Director, Professor Jean Muteba Rahier, for organising the conference on ‘The Wars of the Democratic Republic of Congo’ in March 2011. Congo was officially known as Zaire between 1971 and 1997.
