Notes

1. This paper cannot go into the many spellings and subtle or less subtle distinctions between types of madrassa. The actual translation is ‘school’, but madrassas are generally dedicated to teaching an Islamic curriculum, sometimes for the purpose of preparing religious scholars or ulama, and preserving Muslim culture and traditional forms of knowledge.
