Expulsions: brutality and complexity in the global economy

Notes

1 These issues have been extensively covered in the existing literature including general articles and special issues of major journals such as the Journal of Peasant Studies, the Journal of Agrarian Change, Development and Change, and Land.

2 The Indian state of Kerala appears to have been misspelt as ‘Karmala’ (197).

3 For example, see the Journal of Peasant Studies, vol. 38, no. 4; vol. 39, nos. 3–4, vol. 37, no. 4; vol. 39, no. 2.

4 See, for instance, Journal of Peasant Studies, vol. 37, no. 4; vol. 39, no. 2.

5 Marx's account of capitalist development explicitly notes the dispossession of non-capitalist producers by expanding capitalism (Marx Citation1976, 912). A comparable propensity to dispossess non-capitalist classes lies at the heart of Harvey’s (Citation2005) conceptualization of ABD, even though the context of neoliberal globalization is different from that of Marx's formulation of primitive accumulation.

6 The distinction between direct and indirect mechanisms of primitive accumulation/ABD is elaborated in Adnan (Citation2014, 40).

7 This is particularly surprising since, in her earlier work, Sassen (Citation2001) developed the notion of centralization characterizing global cities in the context of neoliberal globalization.
