Removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater using magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IOPs)

ABSTRACT

The present paper reports the adsorption performance of iron oxide nanoparticles (IOPs) for the removal of oxcarbazepine drug from wastewater. Kinetics and adsorption isotherms for the adsorption of oxcarbazepine drug on IOPs have been evaluated. Batch kinetic and equilibrium experiments were carried out to describe the adsorption of oxcarbazepine onto developed iron oxide nanoparticle adsorbent. Thermodynamic studies of the adsorption of oxcarbazepine onto IOPs showed negative ∆G0 and positive ∆H0, suggesting that the adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process, associated with mainly physical adsorption. Oxcarbazepine adsorption and intra-particle diffusion rates, adsorption capacities, equilibrium constants and enthalpy parameters were calculated.
