Propaganda in Asia

Discussion group with a paper by Geoffrey Wheeler

Pages 183-189 | Published online: 24 Aug 2007

This Discussion Group met at the Society's headquarters on Thursday, 27 November 1975, under the chairmanship of Mr P. E. L. Fellowes. Those present, in addition to the Chairman, were Miss V. Conolly, Mr Brian Crozier, Miss K. Draycott, Mr S. F. Humphreys, Mr D. J. Duncanson, Mr D. Kerr, Mr E. H. Paxton, Mr Ian Raitt, Mr E. D. Robertson and Miss A. Sheehy.

The paper was concerned with propaganda as it is conducted in Asia by the Soviet Union and the countries of the West. The term “propaganda” has been used to cover all organized activities by which states seek to project a favourable image of their policies, economies and cultures, and to counter attempts by others to deface that image. It should be taken as including activities sometimes described as “information” or “publicity”.
