Pages 97-137 | Published online: 27 Mar 2012

There is growing interest in trees that are very old, rare, or associated with folkore and traditions. Yew trees with very large girths have been the subject of a large number of studies and many publications concerning the historical and cultural importance of yew have made passing reference to trees in Ireland. The present study reviews accounts of notable yew trees in Ireland to examine the history of interest in these trees and to consider their likely ages. Some new information about individual trees is also presented. A limited survey of the use of yew in Palm Sunday celebrations was undertaken and the importance of yew in Irish folk traditions is briefly considered.
