TREE-LINED CANALS AND THE URBAN FOREST OF TEHRAN

&
Pages 155-173 | Published online: 27 Mar 2012

Summary

A feature of the urban forest of Tehran are the tree-lined canals which were constructed along major avenues during the Pahlavi Dynasty (in the 1920s). These canals are flood irrigated and depend on gravity flow to carry water throughout the city. They provide a unique character to the city with the shade from their large Oriental plane trees (Platanus orientalis) and the visual liveliness and fresh odour of the flowing water. Other aspects of the urban forest of Tehran (history, parks, forest plantations, tree cover on vacant lots, cemeteries) are described. The future of the urban forest of Tehran is discussed in relation to the burgeoning population of Iran and the limited water resources of the city.
