Summary
Fall blood counts on 56 clinically normal cranes of nine different species have provided reference values for the interpretation of haematological changes in 13 cranes presenting with abnormal clinical signs. Hypochromic anaemia, heterophilia and lymphocytosis were found in birds with probable Mycobacterium avium infection and heterophilia and lymphocytosis in birds with bumblefoot, arthritis, nephrosis and cardiac myo‐pathy. In several of the cases with heterophilia and lymphocytosis the fibrinogen level was also raised. A senile bird with thickened heart valves showed macrocytosis.
The potential diagnostic value of clinical haematology in cranes is discussed.

Des comptages de sang total effectués sur 56 grues cliniquement normales appartenant à neuf espèces différentes ont fourni des valeurs de référence pour l'interprétation des modifications hématologiques observées chez 13 grues présentant des signes cliniques anormaux. Une anémie hypochrome, une hétérophilie et lymphocytose ont été trouvées chez les oiseaux ayant une infection probable à Mycobacterium avium et une hétérophilie et lymphocytose chez les oiseaux atteints d'abcès plantaire, arthrite, néphrose et myopathie cardiaque. Dans quelques cas d'hétérophilie et lymphocytose, le niveau de fibrinogéne avait aussi augmenté. Un oiseau sénile avec des valvules cardiaques épaissies présentait une macrocytose.
La valeur d'un diagnostic basé sur l'hématologie clinique est discutée.
Zusammenfassung
Das Gesamtblutbild von 56 klinisch gesunden Kranichen von neun verschiedenen Spezies lieferte Referenzwerte für die Interpretation der Blutveränderungen von 13 Kranichen, die abnormale Blutwerte aufwiesen. Eine hypochrome Anaemie, Heterophilie und Lymphocytose wurde bei Vögeln mit einer mutmaβluchen Mycobakterium avium‐Infektion gefunden, des weiteren Heterophilie und Lymphocytose bei Tieren mit Fuβballengeschwüren, Arthritis, Nephrose udn Herzmuskelpathien. In verschiedenen Fällen mit Heterophilie und Lymphocytose war auch der Fibrinspiegel des Blutes erhöht. Ein seniler Vogel mit verdickten Herzklappen zeigte eine Macrocytose.
Der mögliche diagnostische Wert der klinischen Haematologie bei Kranichen wird diskutiert.
