Isolation and preliminary characterisation of a paramyxovirus from collared doves (streptopelia decaocto)

Summary

A haemagglutinating virus was isolated from the caecal tonsils of dead collared doves (Streptopelia decaocto). The virus was identified as an avian paramyxovirus showing some antigenic relationships with PMV‐7 /dove/Tennessee/4/75 and PMV‐?/pigeon/Otaru/76. Of 15 collared doves and 24 feral pigeons trapped and sampled at the site at which dead doves were found, only two pigeons had significant antibody litres to the isolate. The virus was apathogenic for experimentally infected pigeons and chickens and stimulated only a weak antibody response.

Un virus hémagglutinant a été isolé â partir des formations lymphoïdes caecales de cadavres de pigeons ramiers à collier (Streptopelia decaocto). Le virus a ètè identifié comme un paramyxovirus montrant quelques relations antigéniques avec le PMV‐7/ pigeon ramier/Tennessee/4/75 et le PMV‐?/pigeon/Otaru/76. Des 15 pigeons ramiers à collier et 24 pigeons sauvages capturés et prélèves au même endroit que celui o[ugrave] ont été trouvés les pigeons morts, deux pigeons seulement avaient des anticorps à un taux significatif vis‐à‐vis du virus isole’. Le. virus était apathogène pour les pigeons et poulets infectés expérimentalement et n'induisait qu'une faible réponse sérique.

Zusammenfassung

Aus den caecalen Tonsillen von toten Ringtauben (Streptopelia decaocto) wurde ein haemagglutinierendes Virus isoliert. Das Virus wurde als aviares Paramyxovirus identifiziert. Es zeigte einige Antigenverwandtschaft mit PMV‐7/dove/Tennessee/4/75 und PMV‐?/pigeon/Otaru/76. Bei der Blutuntersuchung von 15 Ringtauben und 24 an dem gleichen Ort gefangenen Wildtauben, von dem auch die toten Tauben stammten, zeigten nur zwei Tauben signifikante Antikörpertiter gegen das Isolat. Das Virus war bei experimenteller Infektion für Tauben und Hühner apathogen und stimulierte nur eine schwach schwache Antikörperbildung.
