Comparison of the pathogenicity for chickens of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and Erysipelothrix tonsillarum

Summary

Twenty‐two strains of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, 14 strains of Erysipelothrix tonsillarum, and four other strains representing two serovars were examined for virulence in 30‐ to 40‐day‐old specific pathogen‐free chickens. Some of the chickens that were given strains of serovars la, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 15 or 21 of E. rhusiopathiae showed signs of disease, lesions, bacteraemia or recovery of the bacterium. In contrast, there were no clinical signs, pathological lesions or bacterial isolations in chickens inoculated with the E. tonsillarum or other strains. The study thus confirmed that strains of some serovars of E. rhusiopathiae are pathogenic for chickens, but that E. tonsillarum strains are not pathogenic and should be omitted from potential causes of erysipelas in chickens.

Vingt‐deux souches d'Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, quatorze souches d’Erysipelothrix tonsillarum et quatre autres souches représentant deux sérovars ont été examinées pour leur pouvoir pathogène chez des poulets exempts d'organismes pathogènes spécifiés âgés de 30 à 40 jours. Certains des oiseaux qui ont reçu les souches appartenant aux sérovars la, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 15 ou 21 d‘Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae ont présenté des signes cliniques de maladie, des lésions, avec bactérihémie ou réisolement de la bactérie. A l'opposé, aucun signe clinique, lésion pathologique ou isolement bactérien n'ont été observés chez les poulets inoculés avec Erysipelothrix tonsillarum ou les autres souches. L'étude confirme donc que les souches appartenant à certains sérovars de Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae sont pathogènes pour le poulet, mais que les souches d‘Erysipelothrix tonsillarum ne le sont pas et ne seraient pas une cause potentielle d'érysipèle chez le poulet.

Zusammenfassung

Zweiundzwanzig Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae‐Stämme, vierzehn Erysipelothrix tonsillarum‐Stämme und vier weitere, zwei Serovare repräsentierende Stämme wurden in 30 bis 40 Tage alten spezifisch pathogenfreien Küken auf ihre Virulenz untersucht. Einige der Küken, denen Stämme der E. rhusiopathiae‐Strovare la, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 15 oder 21 verabreicht worden waren, hatten Krankeitssymtome, pathologische Veränderungen und eine Bakteriämie oder das Bak‐terium ließ sich aus ihnen reisolieren. Im Gegensatz dazu gab es bei Küken, die mit E. tonsillarum oder anderen Stämmen inokuliert waren, keine klinischen Symptome, pathologische Veränderungen oder Bakterienisolierungen. Die Untersuchungen bestätigen somit, daß Stämme einiger E. rhusiopathiae‐Serovare für Hühner pathogen sind, daß aber E. tonsillarum‐Stämme nicht pathogen sind und nicht in die potentiellen Ursachen des Rotlaufs bei Hühner einbezogen werden sollten.

Resumen

Se estudiaron 22 cepas de Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, 14 cepas de Erysipelothrix tonsillarum y cuatro cepas que representaban dos serovars examinadas por su virulencia en pollos libres de patógenos especificos de 30 a 40 días de edad. Algunos de los pollos a los que se administró cepas de las serovars la, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 15 o 21 de E. rhusiopathiae mostraron signos de enfermedad, lesiones, bacteriemia o aislamiento de la bacteria. Por el contrario, no se observaron signos clínicos, lesiones patológicas o aislamientos bacterianos en aquellos pollos inoculados con E. tonsillarum u otras cepas. Este estudio confirma por tanto que las cepas de algunas serovars de E. rhusiopathiae son patógenas para las gallinas pero que las cepas de E. tonsillarum no son patógenas y debieran ser excluidas como causa potencial de erisipelas en las gallinas.
