Occurrence of cutaneous haemangiomas in chickens: Morphological aspects

Summary

The occurrence of cutaneous haemangiomas in chickens is described. Macroscopi‐cally these lesions appeared as a marked redness of the skin, affecting in particular the pericloacal area. Histologically, they resembled capillary haemangiomas, characterized by the proliferation of newly‐formed blood vessels. The proliferating cells were of endothelial origin, as demonstrated by ultrastructural observations and by the positivity of the proliferating cells to staining with specific markers (lectins and anti factor VIII‐related antigen antibodies).

Résumé

La présence d'hémangiomes cutanés chez le poulet est décrite. Sur le plan macroscopique ces lésions apparaissent comme des rougeurs de la peau affectant en particulier la zone péri‐cloacale. Sur le plan histologique, elles ressemblent à des hémangiomes capillaires, caractérisés par une prolifération de vaisseaux sanguins nouvellement formés. Les cellules correspondant à cette prolifération sont d'origine endothéliale comme le démontrent les observations ultramicroscopiques et les réactions positives de ces cellules vis‐à‐vis de marqueurs spécifiques (lectines et anticorps dirigé contre un antigène proche du facteur VIII).

Zusammenfassung

Das Auftreten von Haut‐Hämangiomen bei Hühnern wird beschrieben. Makroskopisch erschienen diese Veränderungen als ausgeprägte Rötung der Haut, insbesondere im peri‐kloakalen Bereich. Histologisch ähnelten sie Kapillarhämagiomen, die durch die Proliferation von neugebildeten Blutgefäßen gekennzeichnet sind. Die proliferierenden Zellen waren en‐dothelialen Ursprungs, was durch ultrastrukturelle Beobachtungen und durch die positive Reaktion der proliferierenden Zellen auf Färbungen mit spezifischen Markern (Lektine und Antikörper gegen Faktor VIII‐verwandtes Antigen) demonstriert wurde.

Resumen

Se describen las características morfológicas de los hemangiomas cutáneos de las gallinas. Macroscópicamente estas lesiones se caracterizaban por una coloración rojiza de la piel afectando particularmente al área de la cloaca. Microscópicamente estas masas se parecían a hemangiomas capilares y estaban caracterizadas por la proliferación de vasos sanguíneos neoformados. Las células proliferantes eran ultraestructuralmente de origen endotelial y fueron reactivas a lectinas específicas para endotelio así como a anticuerpos frente al antígeno relacionado del factor VIII.
