Abstract
The broad aim is to establish the essential theoretical arguments for alternative forms of ownership and competition in the supply of bus and coach services. How useful is current economic theory (contestability, sustainability, etc.) and should the economists perspective be broadened to consider issues such as financial arrangements, management skills etc. The theoretical debate can consider the role of formal statistical/econometric approaches in the investigation of the likely effect of a competitive strategy. Issues such as information asymmetry, bidding strategies, dominance, incumbency should be discussed.
