Abstract

The broad aim is to document the views from the inside associated with running a bus and coach service under different competitive and ownership regimes, not necessarily from operators only. Issues to consider include the ability of operators to adapt to changing environments, the financial commitment required to participate in change, the risks inherent in any form of change, what the long term role of small operators is, and what role bus and coach services will play in the overall supply of passenger transport services. Is there a move towards charter/hire and away from scheduled services? Are school bus service subsidy schemes essential for the survival of many operators?
