Foundations of a set theory for fuzzy sets. 40 years of development

Pages 69-81 | Received 30 Nov 2005, Accepted 27 Jun 2006, Published online: 24 Jun 2008

This paper concisely surveys the different types of approaches toward this foundational problem which have been offered during the 40 years since fuzzy sets first have appeared in print.
