Abstract
In the electroreductive cleavage of methyl diphenyl sulfoniumperchlorate, the proportions of diphenyl- and phenyl-methyl sulphide produced is dependent on the reaction conditions. The influence of potential (V vs SCE), temperature, solvent, proton donor and electrode material on the product ratio of both the thioethers was investigated and compared with the reductive cleavage with sodium amalgam, benzonitrile radical anion and borohydride.
A reaction mechanism, which includes consideration of bonding energy parameters, and which is consistent with the preparative results is proposed.
