Abstract

This paper describes the radical addition of mercaptanes to arylethins, which leads to two different products. The monoaddition yields enolthioether,1,2,3 which show a special cis and trans isomer ratio. A second addition of a mercaptane molecule to the monoadduct leads to an acetal-like dimercaptoether.4 By radical addition of mercaptobenzene to ethinylbenzene, both products were observed.3 The reactions between ethinylbenzene and 1,3-di-mercaptobenzene as well as between mercaptobenzene and 1,4-diethinylbenzene gave the monoaddition products only, the second addition could not be observed. The same behaviour shows the system of 1,4-diethinyl-benzene and 2-mercaptonaphthaline.

The composition of the compounds and their cis-trans ratio were determined by n.m.r. and i.r. techniques, as well as by mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis.
