Abstract
National identity played a significant role in many aspects of 19th-century photography. The 24 carte-de-visite photographs here reproduced were intended as a concise pictorial inventory of working-class Mexicans (or, at least, those individuals most likely to be seen by a passing tourist). Photographed by Cruces y CA-, of 4 Empedradillo, Mexico City, these images were awarded a ‘Premiada en la Exposition de Filadelfia’ in 18761.
