Abstract
Some years ago it became apparent that a focus was needed for the wide range of high quality biomedical engineering activity in the United Kingdom. As a result, in 1993 the Joint UK Focus for Biomedical Engineering was established under the auspices of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Membership includes both professional and governmental bodies involved in biomedical engineering, with its aims being to raise the general awareness of biomedical engineering issues. To help achieve its aims, the Focus organizes conferences on what it considers to be key issues in the field, the latest of which was entitled, 'Beating heart disease with engineering'.
