Upon boundary conditions imposed by a stratified fluid

Pages 289-298 | Received 28 Sep 1970, Published online: 12 Sep 2006

Abstract

It is shown that in the limit of slow steady linearized flow and infinite stratification a stratified region lying above or below a layer of destabilized fluid produces zero velocity and zero stress boundary conditions. These novel boundary conditions constrain flow more fully than the more common rigid or free conditions, and arise because the penetrative flow in the stabilized region must pump only a finite amount of heat.
