FIXING GRAPHITE: A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION INTO THE CONSERVATION OF SHELLEY'S NOTEBOOKS

Summary

This article discusses the conservation problems of MS. Shelley adds e. 12 in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. The pencilled images in the notebook used by Percy B. Shelley in the early 19th century had become significantly deteriorated. An investigation was initiated to determine a method of evaluating the efficacy of fixatives commonly used in paper conservation and to find a surface treatment that could be sprayed on the pages of the notebook, which would fix the graphite particles to the paper surface.

Both Klucel G and a modified starch were investigated in detail. Preliminary results suggest that while both fixed the graphite particles, modified starch is the more appropriate alternative for this project.

Cet article traite des problàmes de conservation posés par Ie MS. Shelley adds e. 12 conservé à la Bodleian Library, Oxford. Les dessins au crayon d'un carnet utilisé par Percy B. Shelley au début du XIXe siàcle étaient tràs abîmés. Une étude a été enterprise afin de mettre au point une méthode d'évaluation de I'efficacité de fixatifs communément utilisés en conservation du papier et pour trouver un traitement de surface qui pourrait, être vaporisé sur les pages du carnet et fixerait les particules de graphite à la surface du papier.

Le Klucel G et un amidon modifié ont été étudiés en détail. Les premiers résultats montrent que le Klucel G et I'amidon modifié fixent tous deux les particules de graphite, I'amidon modifié est cependent I'alternative la plus appropriée pour ce projet.

Dieser Artikel beschäftigt sich mit dem Problem der Konservierung des MS Shelley adds. e. 12 in der Bodleian Library in Oxford. Die Bleistiftzeichnungen in dem Notizbuch, das P.B. Shelley im 19. Jh. angelegt hat, befanden sich in einem besorgniserregenden Zustand. Gesucht wurde sowohl eine Methode der Bewertung der Wirksamkeit der in der Papierkonservierung allgemein angewendeten Fixiermittel als auch eine Oberflächenbehandlung, die in der Lage ist, die Graphitpartikel auf dem Papier durch Aufsprühen zu fixieren.

Sowohl Klucel G als auch modifizierte Stárke wurden untersucht. Obwohl vorläufige Ergebnisse zeigen, daβ sich beide Mittel dazu eignen, Graphitpartikel auf Papier zu fixieren, scheint modifizierte Stärke die für dieses spezielle Projekt angemessenere Methode zu sein.
