THE HISTORICAL MANUFACTURE OF BLUE-COLOURED PAPER

Summary

This review article presents historical and technical information concerning European blue paper manufacture until the introduction of aniline dyes in the late 19th century. It summarizes important aspects of three major colouring methods, namely the use of blue coloured rags, the dyeing of paper pulp and the addition of pigments to the pulp. Each of these colouring methods is presented in a separate section. Less important, but no less interesting methods such as the tinting of papers after their manufacture are also given attention. Since the production of purple paper is closely associated with blue paper manufacture, it is included in the review. For the same reason, the ‘blueing’ of white paper is also given consideration. In order to provide the appropriate historical context, the text is prefaced by an introduction to the traditional uses of blue paper and its precursors.

Résumé

Dans cet article, on propose une synthèse historique et technique sur la fabrication du papier européen bleu jusqu' à l'introduction des colorants à l'aniline à la fin du 19èmesiècle. On résume d'importants aspects des trois principales méthodes de coloration, plus précisément l'utilisation de chiffons bleus, la coloration de la plâe à papier et l'addition de pigments dans la pâte. Chacune de ces différentes méthodes de coloration fait l'objectd' une partie distincte. On porte également attention à de moins importantes mais non moins intéressantes méthodes telles que la teinture du papier après sa fabrication. Comme la production de papier pourpre est souvent associée avec la fabrication du papier bleu, elle est également comprise dans cette synthèse. Pour la même raison, le ‘bleuissement’ du papier blanc est aussi pris en considération. Afin de le replacer dans un contexte historique, le texte est précédé d'une introduction sur les usages traditionnels du papier bleu et ses prédécesseurs.

Zusammenfassung

Der vorliegende Artikel befaßt sich mit den historischen Herstellungsverfahren von blau gefärbtem Papier vor der Einführung von Anilinfarbstoffen gegen Ende des 19ten Jahrhunderts. Dem technischen Teil ist eine geschichtliche Einführung vorangestellt, in der traditionelle Verwendungszwecke blauer Papiersorten besprochen werden. Anschließend werden die drei herkömmlichen Färbemethoden in ihren wichtigsten Aspekten einzeln vorgestellt. Die Herstellung von blauem Papier mithilfe vorwiegend blauer Lumpen gehört wahrscheinlich zu den ältesten, weil einfachsten Herstellungsverfahren. Daneben gewann auch das technisch kompliziertere Färben der Papiermasse mit pfanzlichen Farbstoffen und der Zusatz von Pigmenten zu der Papiermasse an Verbreitung. In Zusammenhang mit der Produktion blauer Papiere werden auch violett getönte Papier besprochen. Ebenso ist der Herstellung ‘gebläuter’, also nur leicht blau getönter Papiere ein Abschnitt gewidmet und weniger bekannte Verfahren der Papierfärbung finden ebenfalls Erwähnung.
