THE OXFORD PRESERVATION SURVEY. 1: THE MAIN SURVEY

Summary

This paper describes two inter-related surveys carried out between 1991 and 1993, covering the entire College and University library holdings of the University of Oxford. The first summary was a fact-finding exercise, concentrating on environmental conditions, conservation and preservation policies and quantification of the collections. The second survey used the quantification data amassed in the first survey as the basis for the physical assessment of the collections. The statistical basis of the second survey is described in detail together with the method of applying the sampling technique to the collections.

Cet article décrit deux contrôles en relation l'un avec l'autre réalises de 1991 à 1993, couvrant la totalité des bibliothèques qui se trouvent à l'université d'Oxford, dans les Collèges ou dans les bâtiments de l'Université. Le premier aperçu était un exercice d'information se concentrant sur les conditions d'environnement, les politiques de conservation et de restauration et sur une estimation quantitative des collections. Ledeuxième contrôle a utilisé la quantité de données amassées lors du premier contrôle comme base pour une évaluation physique des collections. La base statistique du second contrôle est décrite en détail de même que la méthode d'application de la techique d'échantillonnage aux collections.

Zusammenfassung

In diesem Artikel werden zwei sich aufeinander beziehende Studien dargestellt, die zwischen 1991 und 1993durchgeführt wurden und die sich mit den gesamten Beständen aller College- und Universitätsbibliotheken der Universität Oxford befassen. Die erste Studie beschäftigte sich mit den klimatischen Bedingungen sowie der Erstellung von Richtlinien zur aktiven und passiven Konservierung. Zudem wurden die Sammlungen quantitativ analysiert. In der zweiten Studie wurde der Zustand der Sammlungen/Objekte untersucht, wobei die Ergebnisse der ersten Studie als Ausgangspunkt dienten. Die statistische Basis, auf der die zweite Studie beruht, wird zusammen mit der Stichprobentechnik im einzelnen beschrieben.
