Summary
The conservation of a severely damaged eighteenth-century pastel and gouache portrait was undertaken as a final year research project on the MA Conservation course at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. Treatment undertaken included consolidation of the flaking gouache, surface cleaning, mould reduction, removal of a canvas support and strainer, washing on the low pressure suction table, refining, infilling and toning. Ethical considerations are also discussed.
Résumé
La restauration d'un portrait au pastel et à la gouache datant du dix-huitième siecle et très fortement endommagé a été effectuée comme travail de fin d'études d'une maîtrise en restauration à l'université de Northumbrie à Newcastle. Le traitement a comporté les étapes suivantes: consolidation de la gouache écaillée, nettoyage de surface, réduction des moisissures, enlèvement du support en toile et du châssis, nettoyage sur table basse pression, doublage, comblement des lacunes et retouche. On aborde également les questions éthiques.
Zusammenfassung
Die Restaurierung eines stark beschädigten Pastell- und Gouacheporträts des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde im Rahmen einer Abschlußarbeit des Master of Art in Conservation Studiums an der University of Northumbria in Newcastle ausgeführt. Unter anderem wurden folgende Restaurierungsmaßnahmen durchgeführt: Konsolidierung der abblätternden Gouache, Oberflächenreinigung, Schimmelreduzierung, Entfernen des Leinwandträgers und Keilrahmens, Waschen am Unterdrucktisch, Kaschieren, Ergänzen und Einfärben von Fehlstellen. Efhische Berrachtungsweisen werden ebenfalls erörtert.
