Stromatolites from the Palaeoproterozoic (Orosirian) Glengarry Group, Glengarry Basin, Western Australia

Abstract

New stromatolite taxa are described from the Glengarry Group, Glengarry Basin (formerly part of the Nabberu Basin), Western Australia, as part of ongoing biostratigraphic studies of Proterozoic sequences in Western Australia. A new group and form, Wilunella glengarrica is proposed, and two new forms, Kussoidella karalundienis and Segosia finlaysoniensis are circumscribed. In addition, three other forms, represented only by poorly preserved specimens and as yet insufficiently known for formal taxonomic designation, are briefly described. The assemblage differs from that of the overlying Earaheedy Group, and can be used to distinguish basal Glengarry Group sequences from outliers of the lithologically similar basal Earaheedy Group. The Glengarry Group taxa have not been reported outside the Glengarry Basin, and are therefore of little use at present for inter-regional correlation. However, the ranges of the previously described groups Kussoidella and Segosia are consistent with the probable 1·8 Ga or older age of the Glengarry Group.
