Professional or Personal Values in Community Organisation?

Pages 9-17 | Published online: 15 Apr 2008

Abstract

Social workers and others concerned with social welfare seem to be increasingly aware that their view of the client's situation may not coincide with the client's own view. There is also increasing acknowledgement that this discrepancy is not always a result of professional values and expertise. At times it is merely the result of a different set of personal values. If we are to really respect the client's right to self-determination we must constantly be aware of his values and our own.
