Prescription: A Personal Change Process

Abstract

The social work profession has an on-going responsibility for the evaluation of treatment strategies in social service. This responsibility relates both to strategies that have become traditional and to strategies only recently advocated. Professional concern focuses on two major issues: the ethics of the use of particular strategies and their efficacy. Ultimately efficacy and ethical considerations must be viewed together. The effectiveness of a treatment strategy is impaired by any violence done to the rights of individuals, and ethics are violated to the extent that ineffective treatment strategies are pursued.
