Abstract
There is no shortage in the Australian literature of descriptions of the plight of the aged, the vast array of unmet needs and the apparent indifference of the young towards the concerns of the old. Were it merely a matter of all of us, as a nation, not spending enough money on the care of the aged, then the most callous amongst us might shrug it off with the explanation that, within the broad pattern of competing priorities, health and welfare cannot be allotted any more.
