Why is Placement Failure So Rare?

Pages 17-22 | Published online: 15 Apr 2008

Abstract

Drawing on personal experience and the findings of an exploratory study, the author argues that uncertainty about “what” we assess and “how” we assess students in fieldwork placements can lead to incompetent workers being allowed to qualify. Recommendations are offered for improving the reliability of assessments, which aim to promote discussion of this neglected area of social work education.
