Abstract
The article offers observations on Wolfensberger's social role valorisation (SRV) concept, which proposes that the most explicit goal of ‘normalisation’ is the enablement, maintenance and/or defense of valued social roles for people, particularly those at risk of social devaluation, by using (as much as possible) culturally valued means. It provides as an example, a human service ‘vignette’ in which the SRV principle has been seriously violated and a ‘vignette’ in which care has been taken to address SRV issues. It is suggested that without attention to SRV, success of deinstitutionalisation programmes will be seriously jeopardised.
