What's happening in health: Progress and prospects for social work

Pages 3-7 | Accepted 01 Oct 1998, Published online: 01 Feb 2008

Abstract

The Australian health care system already absorbs 9.5% of GDP, and costs could rise further due to advances in medical technology, demographic change and pressures from powerful service providers with vested interests. Australian policy-makers must thus find ways to contain costs, while maintaining quality of care. This paper details current reform objectives, and explores their ramifications for social workers.
